Arthur, a normal Earthman, and the Alien Ford Prefect, trapped on Planet Earth, hitchhike from the Vogon spaceship. The Vogons could describe as a wicked race just before Earth was destroyed.
They’re being tortured by the Vogons on their spacecraft. The torture that Adams mentions in the book means really bad poetry reading. Right after that they are through into space and possibly the most impossible thing happens: they were rescued by the Heart of Gold which is another spacecraft and continued their adventures.
